Rogan Bruce is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and Director and Head of Trade Marks at Smit & Van Wyk, Inc. He specialises in trade mark and copyright law, with experience in local and international trade mark applications, portfolio management, prosecution and enforcement.
Rogan joined Smit & Van Wyk in March 2016 as a Candidate Attorney in the trade marks department. Since then, he has progressed through the firm, taking on increasing responsibility for client matters and the management of its trade marks department. His career includes handling complex trade mark disputes, managing international trade mark portfolios and advising clients on the protection and enforcement of their intellectual property rights.
His practice encompasses trade mark infringement proceedings, oppositions, cancellations and other contentious matters, alongside the filing and prosecution of trade mark applications in South Africa and internationally. He works with clients across a range of industries, helping businesses protect their brands, manage their intellectual property portfolios and navigate the legal considerations involved in expanding into new markets.
Rogan holds a BA Law and an LLB from the University of Pretoria. His interest in intellectual property law began during his undergraduate studies, where he developed an interest in how trade marks distinguish businesses, establish brand identity and determine the rights of brand owners.
As Director and Head of Trade Marks, Rogan focuses on developing the firm’s intellectual property services, improving operational efficiency and supporting its expansion across Africa. He approaches legal practice with an emphasis on practical, client-focused and efficient solutions, tailored to the needs of each client and the commercial realities of their business.
